According to investigators, Massachusetts State Police troopers responded at approximately 3:20 p.m. on Monday after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a serious crash on the westbound side of Interstate 195 in Westport. Authorities said an Audi was stopped in the right travel lane with substantial front-end damage, while a Chevrolet Silverado had come to rest in a nearby tree line after sustaining catastrophic damage. Investigators also determined that a green BMW believed to have been involved in the collision had left the scene before troopers arrived.
Police identified the driver of the Chevrolet Silverado as Mario Carreiro, 64, of Fairhaven. He was found outside his pickup truck suffering from severe injuries. Emergency personnel transported Carreiro to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead despite lifesaving efforts.
