BESSEMER, Ala. — A 5-year-old boy has died following what investigators believe was an accidental shooting at a home in Bessemer on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Bessemer Police Department.
Authorities said officers were dispatched at approximately 12:26 p.m. to the 3000 block of Carolina Avenue after receiving a report of an accidental shooting involving a child. Police said officers arrived at the residence within one minute of being dispatched and found the child outside the home suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Officers immediately began life-saving measures, and emergency medical personnel also provided assistance at the scene. The child was transported by NorthStar EMS to UAB Medical West for emergency treatment.
Despite the efforts of first responders and medical staff, the boy later died from his injuries at the hospital. Authorities have not released the child’s identity, pending family notification.
As part of the ongoing investigation, police said an adult family member was taken in for questioning to help detectives determine how the shooting occurred. Investigators have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Based on the preliminary investigation, the Bessemer Police Department believes the shooting was accidental. Officials said no criminal charges are anticipated at this time, though the case remains under active investigation.
