HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Huntsville Police Department has concluded its investigation into a fatal hotel shooting that claimed the life of Patrick Erin Blood, 29, determining that the person who fired the weapon acted in lawful self-defense. Authorities confirmed that no criminal charges will be filed following a review of the evidence.
Police identified Blood as a Huntsville resident who died after being shot during an altercation Monday evening at a local hotel. Officers and HEMSI emergency medical personnel were dispatched at approximately 7:30 p.m. to the Comfort Suites in the 6200 block of Torok Circle after receiving reports of a shooting.
When first responders arrived at the scene, they found Blood inside the hotel suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency personnel attempted life-saving measures, but Blood was pronounced dead at the scene.
The individual who discharged the firearm remained at the hotel following the shooting and was detained by responding officers. Investigators with the Huntsville Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit then processed the scene and conducted interviews as part of the investigation.
According to detectives, the shooting followed a physical altercation between Blood and the other individual involved. Investigators determined that the firearm was discharged during the confrontation after the other person acted in self-defense.
Police collected witness statements, physical evidence, and other investigative information before presenting the completed case to the Madison County District Attorney’s Office for review. Prosecutors agreed with investigators’ findings that the shooting met the legal requirements for self-defense under Alabama law.
The Huntsville Police Department confirmed that no criminal charges will be filed against the individual who fired the weapon. Authorities have not released the identity of the shooter.
The investigation has now been closed, with officials determining that the use of deadly force was legally justified based on the circumstances reviewed. The department continues to encourage the public to rely on official updates as authorities work to provide accurate information regarding incidents involving public safety.
