David Jon Morgan Jr. Obituary, COHASSET, Mass. — David Jon Morgan Jr., a beloved husband, father, coach, mentor, and longtime member of the Cohasset community, died unexpectedly at his home on July 25, 2026. He was 54.
Born on November 19, 1971, in Newton, Massachusetts, and raised in Needham, David was the son of Colleen Carter Morgan and David Jon Morgan Sr. He was predeceased by both parents and his sister, Stephanie Alford Mixon. Throughout his life, David was known for his generosity, humor, kindness, and ability to make those around him feel valued and supported.
David developed a passion for athletics at an early age, becoming an accomplished swimmer at the Needham Pool and Racquet Club before making his mark at The Roxbury Latin School. There, he served as captain of the football, basketball, and baseball teams and earned statewide recognition for his achievements. During the 1989–1990 school year, he was named Independent School League Player of the Year in football, basketball, and baseball, becoming the only male athlete in league history to receive that honor in all three sports during the same academic year. He also earned Boston Globe All-Scholastic honors in each sport.
He continued his athletic career at Harvard University, competing in football and baseball. As a baseball player, David became one of Harvard’s standout athletes, earning the 1993 Ivy League Player of the Year award and becoming a unanimous selection to the inaugural All-Ivy First Team. His performances during the Beanpot Tournament at Fenway Park, including memorable home runs, became part of Harvard baseball history.
In 1993, David was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 18th round of the Major League Baseball Draft after his junior year at Harvard. He went on to play professionally for six years within the Blue Jays organization, reaching the Double-A level. After his baseball career, David transitioned into the mortgage industry, where he spent 16 years with Fairway Independent Mortgage. He was known as a trusted advisor who helped many families through important milestones in their lives.
Beyond his professional and athletic accomplishments, David dedicated much of his life to coaching and mentoring young athletes. He coached football and baseball at Roxbury Latin and later became deeply involved in the Cohasset community, serving as President of the Cohasset Youth Baseball and Softball Association. He also volunteered as a coach in soccer, basketball, softball, and other youth sports programs, always focusing on helping young people build confidence and recognize their potential.
David’s greatest joy came from being a father to his daughter, Elizabeth “Libby” Carter Morgan. He was devoted to supporting her and was present for her athletic events, including volleyball, basketball, and softball games. He became a familiar and valued presence with the South Shore Patriots U-14 softball team, where he supported players, coaches, and families and was affectionately known for keeping GameChanger during games, earning the nickname “DaveChanger.”
David is survived by his wife of 20 years, Pamela (Ehrstein) Morgan, as well as his daughter Libby and many extended family members, including his nephew Jacob Matthew Mixon, whom he loved like a son, along with siblings, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was also deeply loved by many friends, teammates, colleagues, and members of the Cohasset community who were touched by his kindness and generosity.
Funeral services will include visiting hours on Friday, July 31, 2026, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home in Cohasset. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Cohasset, followed by interment at Beechwood Cemetery. Family and friends will gather afterward at Hatherly Country Club in Scituate to share memories and celebrate David’s life.
David Morgan’s legacy will be remembered through the countless lives he influenced as an athlete, coach, mentor, professional, husband, father, and friend. His dedication to helping others and making people feel valued left a lasting impact on his community. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
